Xiaomi to use On-Screen fingerprint scanner on its budget smartphones
Ever since Vivo launched it's Vivo X20 plus UD smartphone last year, many smartphone manufacturers have adopted the both the ulta-sonic and optical In display fingerprint sensor technology. Even though we have seen more of this in 2019, they have all been limited to flagship phones with OLED display panels due to the challenges with LCD displays.
Now, a Chinese company called Fortsense has just made a breakthrough by creating an in-display fingerprint sensor that works with LCD display. The company recently submitted over 160 patents on LCD on-screen fingerprint solution. Xiaomi is now reportedly looking at the possibility of including this technology in one of its upcoming budget smartphones.
According to a post on Weibo by Xiaomi’s product director, Wang Teng, the company will use this technology later this year or next year and the product will be less than 2000 Yuan ($297,
Rs 16,990). However there is no information yet on which Xiaomi smartphone will adopt this technology first or when it will be launched but we expect it to be
at least by the end of 2019 or more likely in early 2020. According to him;
“LCD screen fingerprints are technically feasible, but this year should be less likely to have a product launch. The fastest would be the end of the year or most-likely next year…”
Nonetheless, the LCD fingerprint reader is still a new piece of tech that hasn't been implemented on any smartphone yet so we don't know much about it's accuracy, speed on impact on battery life, however the company claims that the fingerprint recognition rate is comparable to traditional capacitive fingerprints, and the algorithm is still In evolution.
